There are so many incredible Indian restaurants in Birmingham, and I’ve tried out a fair few of them. From the Balti Triangle to the city centre, and the rest of the city, Indian food is in high demand. One restaurant that had been on my list for a while is Soho Tavern. Due to COVID hospitality closures, Soho Tavern is now delivering to the residents of Birmingham via JustEat, Deliveroo and UberEats.
Soho Tavern, a multi-award winning Indian restaurant and bar, is based in Hockley, Birmingham. Luckily, they are now expanding with a new venue in Gateshead coming soon.
I was lucky enough to be contacted by Soho Tavern and I was sent enough food for 2 people (although this was actually so much more!). It lasted 2 people for 2 nights so big thanks to Soho Tavern for that!
So, let’s discuss what I received and my thoughts on the food.
Starter – Mixed Grill
To start with I got a mixed grill, which featured chicken tikka, sheesh kebab, lamb chops, chicken wings and king prawns. This was absolutely huge! My absolute favourite part of the grill was the sheesh kebab, which was packed full of flavour and super soft. The chicken tikka and king prawns were also lovely. The chicken wings were great, although one of my least favourites (this is just personal preference though – I’m not overly fond of chicken wings). The lamb chops were nice too, although there wasn’t a lot of meat on them. There was also a selection of dips provided, which were the perfect accompaniment.
Overall, I thought this was an incredible mixed grill. I would order again and definitely recommend to everyone!
Main Course – Butter Chicken
I ADORE butter chicken, and when I say that this is one of the best I’ve had in a while I truly mean it. The chicken was perfect and the sauce was creamy and flavourful with a hint of spice. I can tell why it is one of their most popular curries, and I can’t wait to get it again.
Sides – Chilli Chips, Naans, Rice
First up, let’s discuss the chilli chips. I’ve never ordered chips from an Indian before but these truly were lovely. Again, this is one of their most popular dishes and I understand why. If you’ve never had chips with your curry either, it’s definitely worth a go!
The pilau rice was ideal for soaking up that glorius butter chicken sauce. Pilau rice is one of my favourites and is always perfect with a curry!
I was given a Garlic and Coriander Naan and a Chilli Naan. Both were amazing; my favourite being the garlic and coriander. The naan is always one of my favourite parts of an Indian feast and if I get a bad naan I probably won’t order again from that place (even if the rest of the food is great). Luckily, I LOVED these ones.
Overall, I thought all the food I received was wonderful. The mixed grill is perfect for sharing. For one person, I’d probably just order sheesh kebab or chicken tikka by itself. The curry was amazing and perfect with the rice and naan.
If you’re looking to try a new Indian takeaway, you should definitely give Soho Tavern a try. Both me and my flatmate gave it a 9.5/10 (neither of us like giving a 10…). I’m looking forward to ordering again soon to try out some of their other curries. I’ll still smash that garlic and coriander naan though. Once restaurants are open again, I’m really looking forward to eating in the restaurant too!
